Summary/Abstract: The study has a dual cask: 1. to analyse the con¬cept of quality in academic work and 2. to critically contemplate how the quality is created or not attained in multidisciplinary programs in the U.S.A.. The qu¬ality movement in the academic environment has be¬en first of all adminarators' tool of control and alloca¬tion of resources. Scientific progress and development of scientific work hardly results in quality assesment. The study proposes a new approach to quality crea¬tion in academic work on the basis of activity theory. In the empirical study the analysis of multidisciplina¬ry programs reveals the importance of methodologi¬cal work in quality creation. The analysed programs did not attain their quality goals of creating a joint methodological approach, which would integrate dif¬ferent disciplines.
