Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the actions of the Lower Silesia voivodeship government in order to improve transport accessibility of the emerging Wrocław Metropolitan Area. The authors of the article start with the analysis of the formation process of metropolitan areas in the contemporary world and particularly in Europe. Based on that analysis they present the actions carried out by Lower Silesia voivodeship in recent years aimed at the improvement of local roads, railways and airport infrastructure. As a part of these actions a special atten¬tion should be paid to the commitment of the voivodeship government in building a modern metropolitan railway system, creating Central European Transport Corridor (CETC) and acti¬vating the Odra River Waterway. All these actions aim at strengthening primary growth centre in Lower Silesia Voivodeship which is Wrocław Metropolitan Area, through better links with local and foreign environment and, consequently, leading to further growth based on the prin-ciple of sustainable development.
