Summary/Abstract: The paper identifies a two channel strategy developed by the authors of the Danish Dogme films having as goal the generation of the illusion of reality. The first channel is aiming at the visual layer of the movies, which shows a firm decision to break with the style of the traditional fiction films. The second channel of this strategy is concerned with the narration of the films. In this regard Dogme – contrary to what had been declared in the Vow of Chastity – chose one of the most popular film and TV genres: melodrama. On the one hand Dogme films created a highly self-reflexive visual style and then they combined it on the other hand with a genre which calls for extreme audience identification. Documentarism and deeply conventionalized stories are put together in most Dogme films to create the reality of fiction.
