Summary/Abstract: The article analyses Arvydas Šliogeris' interpretation of the history of philosophy. It demonstrates the development of the interpretation from Marxist methodology to the application of original philosophical principles and the formulation of a distinctive ontological concept of the history of philosophy. The article analyses given methodological theories, the methodological approach (the explanation of philosophical theory by nontheoretical reality) and designates their theoretical value. The structural elements of Šliogeris' scheme of the history of philosophy and their working are explicated, and this scheme is evaluated in the context of Western European philosophical historical explanation projects. It is stated that the originality of the considered interpretation is determined by the creation and application of the most important explanatory category of thingness for philosophical thinking and evaluating its constructs; the development of this category is also analysed.
