Summary/Abstract: The paper is an attempt to survey the evolution of the Filioque controversy from its beginning until the Council of Lyons. It is presented its political and ecclesiological context. Although fundamentally a doctrinal controversy, Filioque was born admist secular political turmoil and thereafter could rarely free itself of mundane entanglement. Nor would it be long before the problem ramified into the ecclesiological realm and became inextricably bound to the question of papal primacy. Unfortunately, in our days, the Filioque’s issues still remain unresolved.
