Political Body and Political Space

Summary/Abstract: The text is a part of a research project done by the Institute for Critical Social Studies, entitled 'Weekly Newsreels: Toward the Historical Sociology of Socialism1. The cinema chronicle - a kind of 'self-writing history of the present' - is considered as a medium acting in co-operation with the gaze of the beholder and, due to that, difficult to discern as a medium. The newsreel achieves its basic suggestions non-discursively, by moving our gaze, and in this motion it constructs the regimes of transition of gazes into the public space. This attempt for a sociology of the detail is applied onto specific frames from newsreels.
