Summary/Abstract: In Byzantine legislation the succession to the throne was never regulated, neither was the principle of dynastic legitimacy formally defined. Iп the centuries-old practice of the Empire, emperors сате to power either after being formally elected Ьу the army, the senate and representatives of the people, or Ьу successful usurpation, or Ьу succession within one family. The natural tendency of sovereigns towards securing rule for their heirs was certainly the strongest. All models of suссеssiоп can Ье identified in the 4th century. They are echoed in the basilikoi logoi of that epoch.
