Summary/Abstract: This paper investigates the recurrent images in Frances Brooke’s The History of Emily Montague (1769) and Susanna Moodie’s Roughing It in the Bush (1852), which reveal the West European outlook at that time as well as the autoimage of Britishness and the heteroimages of the various others (French, Indian, American) that the narrators come in contact with, in the British North American Colonies. The author uses a comparative method that combines a cultural approach with postcolonial interest.
