NIGHT WITH HAMLET: INTERTEXTUALITY AND INTERPRETATION IN THE ÁRPÁD TŐZSÉR’S TRANSLATION OF VLADIMIR HOLAN

Summary/Abstract: This study provides the treatment of the translations of Vladimir Holan by Árpád Tőzsér into Hungarian, examines the strategies used by the translator, and the influence of the translation to his own poetical oeuvre. The author deals with the methamorphoses of the texts on the poetic level with the special regard to the transformations of motives and intertextuality caused and generated by the target langugage. Tőzsér’s controversial translation of Noc s Hamletem (Night with Hamlet) excited a significant professional debate in Hungary. The reading of translations supposes two principal strategies: for the non differencial reader the translation is a prototext, while the differencial reader can compare the source text with the target text, which function is indicated usually by the paratexts (title page, blurb, epilogue etc.). This mentioned strategy leads to the idealisation and to the overestimating the source text. The emphasis of the originality of pretext can demote the translator to a simple craftsman.
