Summary/Abstract: Can we draw a parallel between the atheistic policy of the communist states from the second half of the 20th century and the secular policy of certain European states in the beginning of the 21st century? This question became topical in the context of the case of Lautsi, which was heard by the European court of human rights and was about the right Christian symbols to be displayed in state schools in the countries with century-old Christian traditions. Based on the Bulgarian experience from the epoch of communism, the article questions the relevance of this parallel, comparing the policies of forced and natural secularization in the two regions of the European continent and the effects of these policies.
