Summary/Abstract: The article questions why certain practices of “colonization” of the “Kingdom of Heaven” by different rules of the social order can be observed today at the Central Sofia Cemetery. The first part discusses the cemetery as heterotopy, where plenty of mutually contradictory meanings interact with each other. The second part reveals practices of communication with the dead in a separate reality and draws the attention to the related forms of ontological fallacy. The third part presents how the dead obtain the status of “as-if”-agents of the social world. In conclusion, the Christian belief that we all are equal in death is questioned, based on the author’s observations of practices aimed to maintain the symbolic dimensions of social distinctions in the cemetery.
