Summary/Abstract: This paper seeks to fill a gap in the current literature by examining the process of community building as an active human endeavor, adapting social network approaches to the study of social computing, and defending the universal value of the liberal ideal of autonomy. Leskovec et al. hold that there is an ongoing challenge in adapting social network approaches to the study of social computing, and examine the interplay between positive and negative links in social media. Fernback advocates a symbolic interactionist perspective on cybercommunity that focuses on the process of community building as an active human endeavor. Porto puts it that standards of news quality should be able to verify which cues are available in the news coverage.
