Summary/Abstract: When discussing any aspects of the complex problem of medieval Hungarian urban development, it is inevitable to call the attention to some characteristics. The first and most important point to stress is that, though in Hungary already prior to the beginning of the 13th century there existed settlements of big economic importance which took part in the areal division of labour, the birth of real towns, that is of settlements which - besides being centres of trade and handicraft - enjoyed broad legal autonomy, was not earlier than the turn of the 12th and 13th century, when the elements of commodity production and money economy made their appearance in Hungary.
