Summary/Abstract: Spatial diversification of labour demand is discussed in the system of local labour markets of Lower Silesia, as one of the most demanding and unique regional labour markets in Poland. The article presents the evaluation of trends in demand, as observed in the period following Poland’s accession to the EU structures. Based on public statistical data, the authors analyze the changes in the employment figures and job offers, the share of non-subsidized jobs on offer and the employment rate. The results, evaluated via a synthetic measure of labour demand formula, are then used to construct a ranking of Lower Silesia districts. Taking into consideration the cyclical economic fluctuations of labour demand, two distinct periods are singled out, namely: 2004–2008 and 2008–2010. The results of the analyses show that the direction of changes in the labour demand in those periods was divergent (positive vs. negative) and that the variations of labour demand by district are significant and well-established, with the exception of a few selected districts. A marked disproportion in the development of local labour markets is found, with urban district of Wrocław and the centers of copper and lignite industries ranking ahead of the peripheral districts of the region. Rising labour demand is also found in the Special Economic Zones of the Lower Silesia region. The remaining districts, with markedly weaker labour markets, should benefit from labour policy instruments to stimulate the labour activities of the unemployed, paid from public funds.
