Summary/Abstract: The valency theory and the dependency grammar are part of the description of the german language and represent an important evolution phase in the linguistics, with practical use in the foreign language learning and teaching, in lexicography, computational linguistics and translation. The development of the theory of valency has as a consequence the description of valency and dependency on various levels (morpho-syntactic, logical-semantic, communicative- pragmatic) and the analysis of the valency of different word categories (nouns, adjectives) after the model of verb-valency (similarities and differences), as well as their description in correspondent valency dictionaries. The present paper describes and synthetizes the valency of word categories, verbs, nouns and adjectives, from the point of view of their important role in the process of correct language learning and use (grammatical and communicative-semantic necessity when forming correct structures and avoiding mistakes). Important aspects are the summary of valency characteristics of the three word categories, their user-friendly exemplification and use in the language course, as well as their lexicographical description in valency dictionaries that serve as aid and material for learners and teachers. The valency theory also contributes to a better language understanding and comparison of languages, i.e. german and romanian, by contrastive analyses and descriptions of language structures in grammar and dictionaries.
