Summary/Abstract: The story of Afghanistan is in many ways very tragic. Considered the “graveyard of empires”, the Afghan state had to deal with invasions, external pressure and internal conflicts. Placed in the heart of world’s arena, Afghanistan was one of the states which has known the experience of wars, but just a few had suffered as much as Afghanistan. In its way for social, political and economic unification, the difficulties which the Afghan state had to face, turn up to be a big challenge for the state itself and for the international community. In less than a hundred years, the known conflicts within quickly escalated, from a manageable civil war to a guerilla war and in the end to an antiterrorism war. Afghanistan was and is the victim of its own decisions, the choice of a prosovietic politic as the one in Daud or Taraki time or the choice of supporting Osama bin Laden in his war with the USA etc. The 9/11 events have radically changed the story of Afghanistan, but besides the negative consequences, like human losses, poverty, etc., a series of positive consequences took place by removing the Taliban and starting the process of modernization and liberalization of society. The process will be slow and uncertain, but the entire Afghan society has the support of the international community for a positive evolution.
