Summary/Abstract: The appearance of the ecclesiastical treasurer and his role in the administration of the ecclesiastical goods. The appearance of the ecclesiastical treasurer in the Church cannot be accurately established. A sporadic presence in the fourth century, the institution of the ecclesiastical treasurer will witness a more and more serious spreading up to the Calcedon synod, when it became compulsory regulation throughout the entire administration. Therefore, the fathers present at Calcedon concluded that the administration of the temporal goods of the Church had to be achieved by someone called treasurer. The treasurer, who was chosen from the personal clergy of the Church, had to activate according to the bishop's decisions and to the consensus of the presbyter college. If the ecclesiastical treasurer was not appointed in due time, the superior church administration, namely the Patriarch for the Metropolitan seat and the Metropolitan seat for the Episcopate, could step in and exercise their devolution right by appointing an ecclesiastical treasurer in their administrative units.
