Summary/Abstract: This paper explains characteristics of the contemporary Croatian society in the evolutionary perspective. Asserting the notion of "social change" as being distinct from the notion of "social development", the processes that have been bringing about change of social reality in Croatian society, since 1990 are labeled as "self-managed" postmodernization. Diachronic perspective suggests that the process of "self- -managed" postmodernization is the consequence of changes produced in Croatian society during the 1945-1990 period. These changes, in turn, are labeled as paradoxical modernization (Rogi}, 2000) as they have been centered on a totalitarian value core. At the same time, self-managed postmodernization is strengthened by the reality of postponed accession. "Self-managed" postmodernization is considered as suboptimal, from the social development perspective, for it affirms belated subjective values and is underpinned by the deficit regulatory capacity of national institutions. The above deficits induce further drainage of national sociocultural capital thus diminishing the ability of individuals to act freely.
