Summary/Abstract: The research presented in this article was carried out at the end of the first stage of primary school in Poland, as part of a 2008 nationwide research project financed by European Social Funds. The article concerns children’s school achievements in mathematics. The children’s results are interpreted in the light of their school context. It means that the teachers’ opinions on their work and observations of school practice are also taken into account. The conclusion is that the children are good at following the patterns taught by teachers. Creativity and innovative thinking are not welcome. There is also a lack of using mistakes as learning tools and drawing conclusions from them.
