Summary/Abstract: Spanish Civil War left us with an enormous legacy. According to some authors, over fifteen thousand books have been published on this matter. One of the reasons for this was the fact that the Spanish question was always a “big deal” in political terms. As a multi-layered conflict that involved fascists, clericalists, Nazis, conservatives, nationalists, liberals, socialists, communists, Trotskyists and anarchists, it echoes with a great deal of ideological zeal. As far as scientific historiography goes, things weren’t always good. In Spain, the matter was completely subjected to the Francoist regime, and after the “democratic transition“, an infamous “pact of silence” that persisted until the late 1990ies hindered the development of consciousness about the conflict. It is no surprise that the most successful attempts in historiography of this conflict came before the turn of the century, from Great Britain and other Western countries. In Yugoslavia, “remembering Spain” was a State and Party project ran by the veterans, the “Spaniards”. Spanish civil war became a part of the partisan culture of remembrance and a numerous memoirs were published. The author identified several politically conditioned periods in Yugoslav “memory of Spain“, and gave the reader a general survey of the issue. Detailed analysis of the narratives was the topic of the thesis from which this text was taken.
