Summary/Abstract: In connection with the introduction of direct presidential election in the Czech Republic, Austria has been one of the countries mentioned as having a parliamentary government and direct presidential election. This article summarizes Austrian experience with direct presidential election – the political circumstances of its introduction, the legal regulation and the impact on the position of the Federal President in the Austrian constitutional system. Determining factors of the position of Austrian Federal President are the political system of his country and the uniform tradition of his predecessors. Situation in the Czech Republic regarding the introduction and political context of direct presidential election is quite different. Therefore only a few conclusions can be drawn from the Austrian example. On the other hand, possible inspiration for the Czech legislator stemming from the Austrian legal regulation is examined, regarding the conditions of nomination and possible election taking place with only one nominee.
