Summary/Abstract: There is something gloriously life-giving about the writing of someone who has observed the world closely, thought carefully, and yet writes so freely about profound matters. This is my experience of reading Hoffmeyer’s work and, although I quote only one passage above, it is reading it in the context of some of his later writing (i.e., “Surfaces within surfaces”, the second chapter of Hoffmeyer’s 2008 Biosemiotics volume), that has brought about an epiphany in my thinking about consciousness and sensuous coagency.
