Summary/Abstract: This is a historical outline of the building of the metropolitan cathedral in Cluj-Napoca. The foundation initiative belonged to Bishop Nicolae Ivan; the fi rst charter dates back to 1919. The cornerstone was placed in the morning of the 7th of October 1923, in the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Carol. The sanctifi cation of the Cathedral took place on the 5th of November 1933, in the presence of King Carol II. On the 4th of November 1933, the eparchial assembly decided, among other things, that the construction work should be resumed in order to complete the building according to the initial plan. This only became possible following the accession of His Eminence Archbishop and Metropolitan Bartolomeu to the chair in Cluj in 1993. On the Christmas day in 2000, the works of completing and exterior restoration of the cathedral received Bishop’s blessing. The Orthodox Cathedral in Cluj remains an emblem of Transylvania over time; not only is it a place of worship, but also a symbol of all Romanians
