Summary/Abstract: This article tries to prove the existence of genres in folklore. The genre category is distinguished by its own specific features, its dimensions and forms of existence, which differ from those of the professional arts. The basic idea is that these folklore genres dispose themselves on various planes and exist at different levels of relations, being distinguished by a different activity and intranscience. Every genre should not be studied separately, but only in its relationships with the remaining genres, i.e. in a system of genres. The folklore system of genres is a metasystem, a model on the basis of which the type of artistic culture is built up and functions. Its real existence is the local variant of this model. The system is simultaneously mobile and stable, owing to the character of the folklore process. A settlement is the basic unit in space for the organization and functioning of folklore. A concrete genre system should be studied in its interaction with the system of song cycles and a settlement folklore – song system. The interaction between the three basic artistic principles (word, music, dance) is examined. A dialectic contradiction exists between them, but the dynamic balance is maintained. The most common elements and interactions between folklore and non-folklore song culture have been looked for, with a view to their influence on the genre system. All ’extra-folkloric phenomena’, which may have made their way into the genre system, are adapted to its laws, until its disintegration sets in and a new system is formed.
