Summary/Abstract: In the First Republic of Lithuania, social care services were developing very quickly; in addition, the need for professional social care and for preparation for social care evolved. The aim of this article is to show the initiatives of one society group, i.e. Catholic women in improving the lives of needy women in Kaunas. Using chronicles of statistics, the article discusses the financial situation of workers’ families and single women living in Kaunas when the wages earned did not ensure a living wage, and the social security system was being created and comprised only a small part of the society. Furthermore, the activities of Catholic women which facilitated the lives of needy mothers are discussed on the basis of press of that period and archive sources: the establishment of centres of health advice, kindergartens, mother and child homes, and working homes for girls. A special contribution of Ona Beleckienė, dr. Ona Narušytė, Aleksandra Ragaišienė, dr. Veronika Karvelienė, and P. Peseckienė in developing social services for women is emphasized. For these activists, social care was an important proof of their value and importance for their nation.
