Summary/Abstract: An overlapping of papal and imperial power and complex vassal interdependencies, known from the Middle Ages, can have their secular equivalents in the governments of state co-existing with the UN and with regional and transnational organizations. The picture is complemented by the disintegration of many states in parts of the globe (e.g. Africa), privatization of international violence (as reflected in terrorism) and the world’s technological unification.
