A conservative perspective on politics and political education: Michael Oakeshott

Summary/Abstract: The paper aims to relief Michael Oakeshott’s contribution to the reaffirmation of conservative perspective on political education, as part of the political activity which involves a specific type of knowledge and also as part incorporated in the understanding of politics. It presents Oakeshott’s critical detaching from the understanding of politics as a purely empirical activity and from the ideological style of politics. Finally it indicates the components of knowledge involved in political activity and of appropriate political education proposed by Oakeshott: the profound knowledge of the own country tradition of political behaviour, the knowledge of the politics of other contemporary societies, the philosophical study.
