Summary/Abstract: Deriving its doctrinal pulling power from Burke’s writings, Conservatism was not so much a system of thought or ideology as it was a general inclination and regard for history. The behavior of the Conservative Party has rather been governed by precedent and pragmatism than by rationalism and idealism. That all changed at the beginning of the 20th century with the introduction of universal suffrage in the United Kingdom and the increase in popularity of the Labour Party. It forced the British Conservatives to build up an electoral platform and put together an ideological framework that was to fully develop during the leadership of Margaret Thatcher.
