Summary/Abstract: Sir John Stokes, the first British representative in the European Commission of the Danube, wrote a little known account of his life. Besides a brief presentation of the career of Lt. – General John Stokes, Royal Engineers, the paper contains some excerpts from two chapters of the memories, dealing with the works of the international institution in the early period of its activity (1856 – 1859).
