IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE TRENCH. THE ROLE OF PRELIMINARY TEXTS OF THE TRENCH NEWSPAPERS IN THE CONSTRUCTION/CIRCULATION OF SOLDIER’S ETHOS

Summary/Abstract: This article aims to analyze the subject of the « beginning » in a perspective that combines narratological studies with those on argumentation and discourse analysis. Our hypothesis is the idea that preliminary texts are fertile places for argumentation and contribute to the construction / circulation of ethos. Particularly, we want to focus on Trench Newspapers preliminary texts to demonstrate that they are based on rhetorical argumentation to enhance or contribute to the construction of the collective ethos. We will examine above all the special relationship with the audience and Genette’s « themes of the why » and « themes of the how ». Cet article veut aborder le sujet du « commencement » d’un point de vue qui conjugue les études de type narratologique avec celles sur l’argumentation et l’analyse du discours. Notre hypothèse de départ est l’idée que les textes préliminaires sont les lieux fertiles de l’argumentation et contribuent à la construction / divulgation de l’ethos. Nous voulons, en particulier, aborder les textes préliminaires des Journaux de tranchées pour démontrer qu’ils se fondent sur l’argumentation rhétorique pour renforcer ou contribuer à la construction de l’ethos collectif. Nous analyserons de plus près le rapport privilégié avec l’auditoire et les genettiens « thèmes du pourquoi » et « thèmes du comment ».
