Summary/Abstract: This paper makes available one of the reports of the Penitentiary Students’ Movement. Set up in 1959, it gathered students who were looking for intellectual fun in doing research in prisons and, at some point, also in documenting violations of human rights there. Students carried out researches on delinquencies in prisons as well as on attitude of town dwellers towards prisons and prisoners. The latter was the subject of the research conducted in 1981 in 9 Polish towns, where prisons were located. It proved that in fact people are not afraid of this oppressive institution in their neighbourhood. They even see positive aspects of having prison located in their town. They are not afraid of prisoners, either—their attitude towards this category of people is better than the vox populi might suggest. Respondents do not expect that prisoners are treated very harshly behind the bars, they tend to accept their presence in the streets occasionally and, to some extent, are willing to give them a chance for normal life after release.
