Summary/Abstract: Of all the momentous changes that have taken place in postsocialist Europe perhaps the most contentious have been in the field of health care. After communism, health care change represents an integral aspect of a broader and historically unprecedented process of transformation in the shift to new forms of power and citizenship founded on capitalism. The paper discusses the broader social and political processes such health care transformation has involved in Poland, where the reforms have proved to be the stumbling block of successive governments, and a burning issue in election campaigns. The paper considers what lies behind these frictions, and highlights the emptiness in this context of a global health discourse which emphasises empowerment, the preservation of equity and the importance of trust.
