Summary/Abstract: The need of safety is one of the basic human needs. Its lack does not let people develop themselves, it limits their fulfillment and the positive evaluation of quality of life. The article presents the analysis of the research conducted in 2006 on the population of adult Poles. The aim of the research was to identify which of various social phenomena such as: unemployment, crime, economic crisis, alcoholism, drug addiction, aggression in children and youth etc. are perceived by Poles as particularly threatening their own safety as well as the safety of the whole society. The results were then compared with those obtained in similar research of 1996 in order to delineate the changes in the given phenomena over the last years.
