Summary/Abstract: The article deals with Irish poetry in Irish in the early modern period (late sixteenth to the beginning of the nineteenth centuries). It is a poetry of a subjected people in a period when Irish poets lost many of the privileges they had in Gaelic Ireland and when poetry was on the decline. The paper also discusses a few instances of aislings – a formalised type of poetry loaded with overt political connotations that expressed the hopes of the Catholics that better times would return in their fight against the English (and Protestant) oppressors.
