Summary/Abstract: In the light of any shift in power, particular decisions become obsolete or surprisingly needed. This is the case of Romania too, considering the recent popularity of the Gold Corporation project in Roşia Montana. The corporate project has been generally described as a blessing for the Romanian economy. In the grip of this modern dilemma the President of the Republic asks for an urgent evaluation of this project, given the scarce resources of the national budget facing the economic crisis. Using this particular case-study rather as a framework of analysis, this essay debates the topic of corporate social responsibility as mere voluntary commitments which do not lead to substantial improvements in corporate conduct towards the societies Within which they operate.
