Electoral Debates – A Discursive Ritualistic Game

Summary/Abstract: Political debates have always been an important discursive cue used within election campaigns. Having as theoretical framework Benoit’s functional approach, we will focus our content analysis on the presidential debate (November, 20, 2009) which had Crin Antonescu, Traian Basescu and Mircea Geoana as main discursive participants. The results will prove that the hypotheses of the functional theory should be country-specific in order to render the topics within each discursive function better.
