Summary/Abstract: In Old Slavonic two adverbs which were important for the identification of the position of the body – mainly the human body – were used: *na-kú ‘in the supine position, with one’s back down, face up’ and *ni-cü ‘with one’s back up, face down; vice versa, the other way round’. These adverbs complement each other in terms of meaning and belong to the same structural type – both are based on a complex prepositional structure, and therefore they should be analysed together etymologically. The segmentation of *vúznakú must be carried out as follows: vúz- ‘super’, -na- ‘in, ad; super’ + a structural morpheme -k-.
