Summary/Abstract: This investigation of two remarkable features of the noun phrase – its ability to operate as an independent clause at sentence level and its complex and unorthodox internal structure – brings to light two opposing tendencies: on the one hand, the complexity of the noun phrase’s inner structure and, on the other hand, its simplicity of structure across sentence boundaries. Nominalization implies both morphological and syntactic processes; in generative grammar it implies the operation of transforming the sentence into a noun phrase.
