Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the phenomenon of peasant religiousness, basing on most important publications dealing with ethnography and sociology of rural communities that characterise it in the categories of sensualism, ritualism, particularism and religious nationalism. Simultaneously, this firmly fixed — and according to many researchers, untrue and stereotyped picture is confronted with source materials that have not been used in the descriptions of the phenomenon. In conjunction with contemporary anthropological reflection, which also contests the assumptions of the traditional model of peasant religiousness, a proposal emerges of a more complete and true to life — the present day life included, version of this phenomenon.
