Summary/Abstract: Turkish culture and traditions are a synthesis of Shamanism and Islam. Beliefs such as magic and evil eye that are still valid in Anatolia are the end results of this synthesis. The bad spirit concept believed in Shamanism has been identified with the jinn in Islam and to this end supernatural powers such as evil eye have been related with these beings. These beliefs that have become a part of Turkish culture over time have found their reflections in traditional Turkish arts as well. The jinn element appears frequently in miniatures, literature and shadow play. In this study, the use of jinn and magic elements in Karagoz, which is a part of the traditional Turkish shadow play, has been examined within the concept of intertextuality by carrying out comparisons of the Qur’an text, memorials and shadow play texts found in folklore.
