Summary/Abstract: The paper uses fieldwork materials collected from two confessional groups that have existed in the town of Bansko for more than one hundred years. The paper probes the Paul Stahl’s theoretical approach, which attempts to connect, in different ethnic and religious relationships, the tensions between groups of people. The research demonstrates that in certain situations the existing and documented tension on confessional differences can be suppressed and moderated. In Bansko this process is realized on the basis of a strong and dominating community consciousness. Owing to the opportunities made possible by its dynamic character, the identification model that is used here, clearly emphasizes functional relationships connected with spheres referring to community consciousness. In these processes, the confessional identification is not completely lost. As the example of Bansko shows, it can be expressed through other categories, themselves referring to other levels and processes of identification that, as a principle, address the social sphere.
