Summary/Abstract: Transylvania and the Western areas in the Tenth Century and the Mission of the Bishop Hierotheos. The archaeological data at our disposal, synthesized and presented by Alexander Madgearu in a throughout and convincing manner, seems to favor the hypothesis which identify the location of the bishop Hierotheos's residence somewhere at the confluence of the Mures and Tisa rivers, possibly in the Hungarian town Gyula. However, a number of leading historians are still believing that the Hierotheos's residence was to be found in Bălgrad (Alba Iulia), an important political center in the 10th century, where was also resident a Transylvanian leader who hold the title or name of Gyula. The scarcity of available information and the signs of question posed by the two hypotheses leave the field open for future research.
