Summary/Abstract: The Estonian word mure 'sorrow; worry, trouble; anxiety; care, concern' can be regarded as a two-dimensional notion, designating an emotional as well as a characteristic quality. The characteristics of mure as an emotion word tend to pass on to its non-emotional meaning, lending it a negative aspect. The word signifies one of those emotions that can control as well as be controlled, i.e. it may occur as an active subject, a manipulator, or as an object to be manipulated. The available linguistic data (the number of mure-derivatives, the wide and diverse lexical connotations of the word) suggest that in the cognitive memory of Estonians sorrow, worry, anxiety and concern may occupy a rather important position.
