Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this study is to analyze the medieval European description of the Near East. The study is based on the writings of one of the members of the Fifth Holy Crusade, Jacques de Vitry. According to his book, Historia Orientalis et Occidentalis, the subject of the analysis are the fictional elements of the medieval historiography and geography. Compared to their ancient descriptions, rivers, lakes, nations, animals and plants are verified and set in the 13th century's people's point of view. The author of the study also tries to determine the importance of the fiction in the literature of the period, as well as describes the relation between the medieval author and their precedessors.
