Summary/Abstract: In the last few years we witnessed the slow emptying of the theories related to information society. It is not that theworld have run out of intellectual ammunition. Fresh and new approaches are still coming into existence, but as the concept of information society is used by too many people, in too many places, and for toomany purposes, the notion itself started to deteriorate. It is also evident that sociology reacted slowly and dealt with the problem only after it had overcome its inherent reluctance and narrowness. The effects of this delay are apparent even today. The present article aims at demonstrating the transformations eventuating in the theories of information society and the changes taking place in the role of sociology itself. The authors profess themselves to be supporters of such a theory that doesn’t claim the status of an independent discipline, but offers a common language, approach and attitude for researches working in diverse branches of science.
