"Theological Journal" 1926-1940

Summary/Abstract: “Usuteadusline Ajakiri”, published by the Academic Theologians’ Society and the Faculty of Theology of the University of Tartu from 1926 to 1940, was the first theological journal to bepublished in Estonian. Its history was fraught with financial problems, especially during the great depression of the 1930s. The number of writers was small, and the editors not only determined the focus of the journal (ecclesiastical history and comparative history of religions) but also wrote most of the contributions. Many young theologians publishing their first studies in the journal helped shape Estonian theology during the Soviet regime, when there was very little potential for Estonian theological publications. “Usuteaduslik Ajakiri” began to appear again in 2000.
