Summary/Abstract: The author of the present study The Problems and Contexts of Contemporary Genre Studies deals with a wider context of the so-called genology (genre studies). The first part of his study is devoted to global problems of literary criticism in general and genre studies in particular and the methodology of literary scholarship in which he analyzes the conflict between “soft” and “hard” approaches defending, at the same time, the importance of the so-called technological, textual or immanent methods and their relatively stable position in literary scholar-ship. In a short chapter concerning the history of genre studies he deals with the evolutionary and structuralist approaches as well as with the attempts at the intrinsic reform of genre systematics. The genres in postmodernist shift is the subject of the final part of the study in which the author comments upon American, Polish and Slovak concepts stressing the anthropological and area attitudes demonstrated in some of the Brno volumes produced by the Section of the Theory of Area Studies as part of the Institute of Slavonic Studies of Masaryk University.
