Community of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Šiauliai University: Conception and Manifestation

Summary/Abstract: The concept of “community” and “belonging to community” has been study object in many theories and each of them has its different interpretation. An academic community is simple because there is no enforcement, a person joins it voluntarily and its development tendencies depend on the community members. The community of higher education institution consists of: the teachers, students and the staff. They have an objective: continuous learning and it functions through cooperation among the students, teachers and staff, its members incubate and develop. An academic community and its activity space, the university, were analyzed. The basic element of university independence, its autonomy is academic freedom. The aim is to prove the community conception and its manifestation in Siauliai University, Faculty of Social Sciences. Methodology used: scientific literature analysis, structured interview, statistical data methods (frequency analysis), logical data analysis methods, graphical data analysis. The sample is 95 respondents from the Faculty of Social Sciences. Research results and recommendations for the community development in Siauliai University Faculty of Social Sciences are presented in the paper. The research showed that about 80% of respondents (teachers) named the community of the Faculty as the most absorbing and acceptable because it has right representation in society, goodwill feeling is present in communication among colleagues. The members of the community are valued for their competences; they improve themselves and make a career, are accepted and have influence in decisions. It is Siauliai municipality community of intellectual, creative, spiritual persons, united in cooperation. In Bachelor study program students from the Faculty of Social Sciences opinion the most absorbing community is in their faculty because they belong only to it and do not know other communities. In students' opinion a good community has reciprocal understanding, warm relations, everybody can present his/her ideas, opinion, and realize him/herself. A strong community has common objectives and is joined by the same hobby. A community is a group of people united by specific activities - about 52% of respondents stated this concept of a community. Summarized research results affirmed it. Teachers joined this faculty as a workplace because of the following important reasons: they have proper competence, like pedagogical work, have good career possibilities. Students chose this Faculty because of its convenient location, attractive study programs, career opportunities. Staff joined this Faculty as a workplace because of relations between co-workers, university status and personal attitudes. The feeling of community of Siauliai University Faculty of Social Sciences needs deeper research, which may be carried out by Study quality centre. Study atmosphere, microclimate, relationships, self-expression are related to a strong community.
