Functions of the Verbal Formulae in Childbirth Rituals

Summary/Abstract: The article corresponds to a larger research, dedicated to the functions of speech in folklore ritual. In this sense the text represents an attempt at systematization and analysis of the speech and its functions in childbirth rituals. Following the ritual practices, aimed at the realization of early socialization, the author tries to outline the place and role of the verbal ritual component. The analysis shows that it is possible to delineate verbal formulae, applicable in different ritual situations. That allows the author to view them as means for structuring ritual speech and as a mechanism for its functioning. Depending on the usage and on the ritual situation, speech may perform different functions.
