Summary/Abstract: During the course of a recent lecture in Budapest, the city where I was born, I explained my predicament to the Hungarian audience this way: As I have spent two-thirds of my life in the United States—where my wife is American-born and so are my five children and six grandchildren—I could not help but acquire a good deal of optimism. So much so that my Hungarian friends often tell me that my American optimism is unbearable and that I am terribly naïve. The other side of the story is that several of my American friends consider me unduly pessimistic. They say that despite all the decades I have spent in America, my Hungarian upbringing shows through.
